A Little Girl Exposed the Heiress's Fake Pregnancy

Chapter 04 — Room 214

Chapter 4 of 10

Police reached North Valley Care Center forty minutes later.

The facility stood behind a line of trees almost seventy miles from San Francisco. Its website described it as a private recovery center for wealthy patients requiring confidentiality.

There was no sign near the road.

No public reception desk.

No record showing Eleanor Whitmore had ever been admitted.

Alexander went with Detective Torres. I was asked to accompany them because the hotel footage and electronic access records made me a witness.

Lily stayed with my sister.

Before I left, she hugged me around the waist.

"Will you find the real pregnant lady?"

"We'll try."

"Tell her I'm sorry they used her picture."

I promised I would.

North Valley's director refused to open the gate until Torres showed a warrant. Officers entered first, secured the lobby, and separated staff before anyone could delete records or remove medication.

Dr. Reed's credentials opened the second-floor medical wing.

Room 214 was locked from the outside.

A camera pointed toward the bed.

A woman lay beneath a white blanket.

Her hair was shorter than in the photographs Alexander carried. Her face was thin, almost translucent. She looked older than she should have, not because of years but because exhaustion had settled into every feature.

But she was Eleanor Whitmore.

Alive.

Her wrists were not restrained.

They did not need to be.

She was so heavily medicated that lifting her head required visible effort.

And she was pregnant.

Approximately seven months.

Alexander stopped in the doorway.

"Eleanor?"

Her eyes opened slowly.

For several seconds she stared at him as if he might be another hallucination.

Then tears slid down her face.

"Alex?"

He crossed half the room and stopped.

He did not touch her.

That mattered.

"You're alive."

"I know."

A nurse stepped toward the bed with a syringe tray.

Eleanor recoiled so violently that the monitor alarm sounded.

"Don't let them inject me."

Torres ordered the medication cart sealed.

Paramedics from the county hospital examined Eleanor and prepared an emergency transfer to a public medical center.

Alexander remained near the wall, trying to process three years of grief in the space of a few minutes.

"I buried you."

"I know."

"Why didn't you come home?"

"I tried."

Her eyes shifted toward the door.

"Where is Julian?"

"In custody."

"He'll say I'm confused."

"He can say whatever he wants."

Eleanor looked down at her stomach.

"Do not let Vanessa take the baby."

Alexander's voice broke for the first time.

"Is the baby mine?"

Eleanor closed her eyes.

"Yes."

He stepped backward.

"That's impossible."

"No."

Four years earlier, Alexander and Eleanor had undergone fertility treatment. Several embryos remained frozen after their final unsuccessful attempt. Alexander believed Eleanor ordered them destroyed before the crash.

She had not.

Dr. Reed controlled the storage facility.

Eleanor explained what she could between waves of exhaustion.

After she was abducted, one of the embryos had been implanted without her lawful consent. The people controlling her needed a child whose DNA would prove Alexander was the biological father.

Vanessa would pretend to carry the pregnancy.

After Eleanor delivered, medical records would identify Vanessa as the mother.

Alexander's paternity could withstand any DNA test.

The rest would be paperwork.

"Why?" Alexander asked.

"The trust."

Eleanor knew about the eighteen percent transfer.

Vanessa's fake pregnancy had done more than convince Alexander emotionally. It had pushed him to create a protected heir trust before the child even existed publicly.

Once the baby was born, Vanessa would be named the legal mother and guardian.

Cynthia's foundation would receive the shares under certain conditions.

Julian would remain next in line to run Whitmore Holdings if Alexander became unable to act.

Three things were required for the plan to work:

A biological Whitmore child.

Vanessa recognized as the mother.

Alexander unable to control the company.

He stared at her.

"What were they going to do to me?"

Eleanor's answer was barely louder than the monitor.

"The same thing they did to me."

A paramedic adjusted her oxygen.

Torres asked only one more question before the transfer.

"Mrs. Whitmore, who planned this?"

Eleanor's eyes moved toward Alexander.

"Julian opened the door. Cynthia built the paperwork. Reed made the lies medical. Vanessa agreed to become the mother."

"And you?"

"I was the body they needed."

Alexander lowered his head.

The sentence was not dramatic.

That was what made it unbearable.

As the paramedics rolled Eleanor toward the elevator, she reached for my wrist.

"You're the hotel security director?"

"Yes."

"Your daughter saw the cushion?"

"Yes."

Her grip tightened weakly.

"She saved my baby."

I thought of Lily standing under the chandeliers, afraid and still speaking.

"She noticed what the adults were too distracted to see."

Eleanor looked toward Alexander.

"That happened before."

He understood what she meant.

She had tried to warn him once too.
