“Show me.”

Sloane opened a filing Elise had not found.

Not the public formation record.

An ownership certification Grant had made her upload for the bank.

The beneficial owner was Grant Marchetti.

Elise read the name twice.

“How did you get this?”

“He made me submit it.”

“And you kept a copy.”

“I started keeping copies after the third wire.”

“Why the third?”

Sloane looked ashamed.

“Because the first two felt exciting.”

Elise said nothing.

“He said he was building something separate. He said your mother-in-law controlled everything and he wanted one thing that was his.”

“Teresa controls voting shares. Not his salary.”

“I know.”

“Not his distributions.”

“I know.”

“Not his company car, house allowance, club membership, or travel.”

“I know.”

Sloane’s eyes hardened slightly.

That was good.

Shame alone made unreliable witnesses.

Anger remembered details.

“What did he tell you Meridian was for?”

“At first? Consulting.”

“And later?”

“He said it would become the vehicle for the Nevada deal.”

“There is no Nevada deal.”

“I know that too.”

Elise opened her laptop.

Together they matched transfers against Grant’s calendar.

The pattern sharpened.

Meridian received company money labeled strategy fees.

Within forty-eight hours, Grant moved most of it into an investment account.

The investment account had lost heavily.

Not theft for a secret mansion.

Not another family.

Something stupider.

Grant had been trading leveraged positions with company cash.

“How much?” Sloane asked.

Elise calculated.

The Meridian transfers totaled $612,300.

The loan facility had covered the operating shortfall created by those transfers.

Her personal guarantee protected the bank if the company failed.

Grant had not merely hidden losses.

He had moved the downside toward her.

Sloane stood so quickly the chair scraped.

“I signed some of those wires.”

“Yes.”

“He told me they were routine.”

“You still approved them.”

“I know.”

Elise looked at her.

“Did you ever approve without him telling you?”

“No.”

“Did you ever receive money?”

“No.”

“Did he give you anything besides the perfume?”

Sloane flinched.

“Trips. Dinners.”

“Cash?”

“No.”

“Equity?”

“No.”

“Promises?”

Silence.

Elise closed the laptop.

“That means yes.”

Sloane sat again.

“He said when the Nevada deal closed, he’d leave.”

“Me?”

“And the company.”

Elise almost admired the symmetry.

Grant had promised both women a future built on money neither of them understood the same way he did.

“What do you want from me?” Sloane asked.

“Nothing tonight.”

“Are you going to the police?”

“I don’t know.”

“Are you going to fire me?”

“I don’t know.”

Sloane nodded.

She deserved that answer.

At the door, Elise stopped her.

“Do not delete anything.”

“I won’t.”

“Do not warn him.”

“I won’t.”

“And if he asks about tonight?”

Sloane looked back.

“I delivered documents.”

“Good.”

After she left, Elise sat alone at the kitchen table.

The house was quiet.

Grant would return in an hour.

For fifteen years, Elise had thought the worst thing he could do was choose someone else.

Now she understood how small that betrayal was.

Her phone buzzed.

A message from Grant.

Need you in early tomorrow. Mom called a special finance meeting. Don't know what she found.

Elise read it once.

Then she opened the hidden folder.

There were 214 files inside.

For the first time in six months, she moved the folder out of hiding.

She renamed it.

FOR TERESA.
