The envelope appeared under Adrian’s study door the next morning.
No name.
No seal.
Just one folded sheet of paper.
Please don’t tell Mrs. Cole I spoke to you.
Below that:
Ask me what happened at the pool.
Adrian recognized the handwriting.
Nora.
He found her in the staff cottage behind the main house.
She locked the door after he entered.
That told him enough.
“Why are you afraid?”
“I need this job.”
“Nora.”
She looked down.
“I need my family to have this job.”
Adrian sat across from her.
“What happened?”
Nora’s hands tightened together.
“Miss Lily didn’t slip.”
He waited.
“Mrs. Cole had her necklace.”
“Her mother’s?”
Nora nodded.
“She threw it in the pool.”
Adrian looked away for a second.
Then back.
“And Lily went after it.”
“She went to the edge.”
“What happened next?”
Nora swallowed.
“Mrs. Cole walked behind her.”
Silence.
“Then she pushed her.”
There it was.
Not a misunderstanding.
Not Lily panicking.
Not a wet stone.
A push.
“Did you see both hands?”
“Yes.”
“You’re sure?”
“I was looking right at them.”
Adrian’s voice became quieter.
“What happened after Lily fell?”
“She came back up.”
Nora was crying now.
“She grabbed the edge. I ran over.”
“And?”
“Mrs. Cole told me to stop.”
Adrian didn’t move.
“She said no one was allowed to help.”
“Nora.”
His voice cracked for the first time.
“What happened to Lily’s hand?”
The maid pressed her lips together.
“She stepped on it.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
Only for a moment.
When he opened them again, Nora was wiping her face.
“Who else saw?”
“Some of the staff.”
“Names.”
She gave him three.
“Guests?”
“I don’t know.”
“Why did everyone just stand there?”
Nora looked at him as if he had asked the wrong question.
“Because they were afraid of her.”
“Of Vivian?”
“Yes.”
“How long has this been happening?”
Nora stopped.
Adrian leaned forward.
“Nora.”
“The pool?”
“No.”
He felt cold.
“This.”
Nora stared at the floor.
“Mrs. Cole has always been different when you’re away.”
“How?”
“She would punish Miss Lily for small things.”
“What kind of punishment?”
“Taking her phone. Locking things away. Telling staff not to speak to her.”
Adrian’s expression tightened.
“What else?”
“She threw away some of Mrs. Cole’s old belongings.”
Lily’s mother.
“Lily told me that.”
Nora nodded.
“She cried for hours the first time.”
Adrian remembered that night.
Vivian had said Lily was upset because she had been asked to clean her room.
He had believed her.
Nora continued.
“Once Mrs. Cole made the driver leave Lily at the end of the road after they argued.”
Adrian looked up sharply.
“She told me Lily jumped out of the car.”
“No.”
Something in him hardened.
Not anger.
Not yet.
Something colder.
A realization.
Vivian had never needed everyone to lie.
She only needed each person to see one small piece.
No one had the whole story.
Except Lily.
And Adrian had taught his daughter that the whole story wouldn’t be believed.
Nora spoke again.
“Mr. Cole?”
“Yes?”
“The pool wasn’t the first time I was scared for her.”
Adrian slowly looked at her.
“What do you mean?”
Nora’s face changed.
“I think you need to ask yourself something.”
“What?”
“How much do you actually know about what happens in this house when you’re gone?”
