They did not go to Nora's apartment.

Not immediately.

Ethan called no police.

No security team.

No one connected to the Whitmore family.

Instead they went to a twenty-four-hour storage facility where Nora kept the belongings from her childhood home.

Because the music box in the photograph was fake.

Her mother had owned two.

Nora had learned that when she was twelve.

One had remained on her dresser.

The other had been hidden inside an old suitcase.

At 4:17 a.m., Nora placed it on the hood of Ethan's car.

The paint was chipped.

The tiny ballerina inside no longer turned.

Nora opened the bottom panel.

Nothing.

Ethan examined the mechanism.

"This screw is newer than the others."

He removed it.

A thin compartment opened.

Inside was a small memory card wrapped in plastic.

For twenty years, it had waited there.

They viewed it on Ethan's laptop.

Bank records.

Company transfers.

Offshore accounts.

Dates.

Names.

Victor Lang.

Marcus Hale.

And dozens of transactions Nora didn't understand.

Then there was one audio file.

Rebecca Vale's voice filled the car.

"If anyone is listening to this, something has happened to me."

Nora stopped breathing.

Her mother sounded young.

Alive.

"I discovered that Marcus Hale and Victor Lang have been stealing from Whitmore Global for years. Marcus created the legal structures. Victor moved the money."

Ethan stared at the screen.

Rebecca continued.

"I tried to tell Adrian. Marcus intercepted the evidence."

Nora covered her mouth.

"There is more. They are not stealing only from Adrian. They are using Whitmore companies to hide money belonging to people who will kill to protect it."

The recording crackled.

Then her mother said:

"If they discover I copied these files, they will come for me."

Nora closed her eyes.

The recording ended.

For several minutes there was only silence.

Then Ethan's phone rang.

Adrian.

Alive.

Weak, but awake.

Ethan answered.

"We found it."

Adrian listened.

Then said something Nora couldn't hear.

Ethan looked at her.

"My father wants you at the hospital."

"Why?"

"He says he owes you the truth."

Nora looked through the windshield at the first gray light of morning.

"No."

Ethan frowned.

"No?"

"First we send copies of everything somewhere Marcus can't reach."

A slow smile appeared on Ethan's face.

"There you are."

"Who?"

"The woman who grabbed a billionaire's wrist in front of two hundred people."

Nora looked at him.

"You hated that woman twelve hours ago."

"I was wrong."

"That must hurt."

"More than you know."

For the first time that night, Nora smiled.

Only briefly.

Because Ethan's laptop suddenly went black.

Then a message appeared.

ONE COPY WAS ENOUGH TO KILL YOUR MOTHER.

A countdown started beneath it.

10.

9.

8.

Ethan grabbed the computer.

"What the hell?"

7.

6.

Nora's phone rang.

Marcus Hale.

She answered.

His voice was calm.

Almost kind.

"Nora."

She said nothing.

"I think it's time you and I finally talked about your mother."
