The Hart Family Foundation had never merely been a charity.
That was the first truth Theo gave them.
The second was worse.
Twenty-five years earlier Helena Hart had created a network of private recovery homes, maternity centers, and legal aid programs under the foundation. Publicly, they served women escaping addiction, violence, or homelessness. Privately, several facilities were used to move vulnerable women through guardianship proceedings that transferred control of money, children, or property to court-approved sponsors.
Sometimes the sponsors were relatives.
Sometimes they were strangers.
Sometimes, according to Theo, the paperwork was fraudulent.
"You're saying my mother ran an adoption ring?" Evelyn asked.
"I'm saying the system became one. I don't know whether she intended it at the beginning."
"And Dad?"
"Found out years later."
They had moved to a secure conference room beneath Naomi's firm. Lily slept nearby with a security guard Naomi trusted.
Theo spread scanned ledgers across the table.
Names. Dates. Case numbers. Sponsorship payments.
One column appeared repeatedly.
H.H.
"Helena Hart," Naomi said.
Theo nodded.
"Your father wanted to expose it. Gideon convinced him to keep quiet while they dismantled the network internally. Then Malcolm supposedly died."
"He faked his death."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"To investigate without Helena knowing he was alive."
Evelyn pressed her palms to the table.
"And Mara?"
"She discovered part of the same network while reviewing foundation accounts. She confronted Gideon first. Gideon panicked. He staged the bridge crash to make her disappear temporarily while he figured out what she knew."
"Temporarily? He locked her away for four years."
Theo's mouth tightened.
"That wasn't Gideon's decision."
The room went quiet.
"Helena," Evelyn said.
"According to Malcolm, yes."
Evelyn felt physically ill.
"Why would my mother do that to her own daughter?"
Theo looked at the ledgers.
"Because Mara found a name Helena had buried for more than twenty years."
He slid a page across the table.
Near the bottom was an entry from 1994.
INFANT FEMALE — CASE 17-B.
Biological mother: Claire Bennett.
Placement sponsor: Helena Hart.
Final household: Malcolm and Helena Hart.
Evelyn stared.
"What is this?"
Theo did not answer.
He didn't need to.
Evelyn's birth certificate said Helena Hart was her mother.
But the ledger date was Evelyn's birthday.
Naomi read the line twice.
"Evelyn—"
"No."
"We don't know what it means yet."
"It means my entire life is a document my mother manufactured."
Theo shook his head. "Malcolm believed Helena arranged the adoption legally at first. The falsification came later."
"Why hide it?"
"Because Claire Bennett didn't disappear."
He produced a photograph.
A young woman stood beside Helena outside a clinic. Dark hair. Pale eyes.
Evelyn's eyes.
"Where is she?"
"No one knows."
Then Lily, who was supposed to be asleep, spoke from the doorway.
"I know her."
Everyone turned.
Lily walked closer and pointed at Claire Bennett.
"She lived with us."
Evelyn's heart slammed against her ribs.
"When?"
"Not all the time. She came when Mom was sick. We called her Grandma Claire."
Naomi closed her eyes briefly.
"Is she alive?"
Lily nodded.
"She told Mom to send me to Evelyn if the red book was stolen."
Theo stood so quickly his chair tipped backward.
"The red ledger?"
Lily nodded.
"Where is Claire now?"
"Mom took her to a safe place."
"Where?"
Lily looked at Evelyn.
"The room under the church."
St. Agnes had a chapel.
The old recovery center had been built around it.
Theo's face went blank.
"There is no room under the church."
Lily frowned.
"Yes, there is."
"How do you know?"
"Because I was born there."
