A Street Child Held Out My Sister's Hair Clip. My Sister Died Nine Years Ago.

Chapter 12 — The Voice Behind Room Zero

Chapter 12 of 12

Evelyn knew the cry before she saw the woman.

Not because it sounded exactly like Mara. Nine years had changed the voice. Fear had changed it more.

But there were sounds the body remembered even when the mind had surrendered them.

The way Mara inhaled before trying not to sob.

The small break at the end of a breath.

Evelyn stepped through the opening.

"Mara?"

The crying stopped.

Theo raised a flashlight.

Room Zero was not a room.

It was a corridor.

White tile. Narrow doors. Old observation windows. New locks.

At the far end, a figure moved behind glass.

Lily screamed, "Mom!"

She tore free of Evelyn's hand.

Evelyn caught her around the waist before she could run down the corridor.

"Wait."

"Mom!"

The figure behind the glass slammed both palms against it.

A woman's face appeared.

Thin.

Bruised.

A scar crossing one eyebrow.

Mara.

Alive.

Evelyn's legs nearly failed.

For nine years she had rehearsed impossible reunions in dreams. Mara on a train platform. Mara at the front door. Mara calling from an airport. In every version Evelyn ran to her.

Now a locked door stood between them.

Mara shook her head violently.

Her lips formed a word.

NO.

Evelyn stopped.

Mara pointed behind them.

Theo spun.

The hidden wall slid shut.

Naomi and Adrian were still on the other side.

"Open it!" Adrian shouted through the wall.

Theo pulled at the seam.

Nothing.

Red emergency lights came on above the corridor.

A speaker crackled.

Then Gideon's voice filled the passage.

"Evelyn."

She stared upward.

Lily clung to her.

"You always did arrive one truth too early."

Theo drew his gun.

"Show yourself."

Gideon laughed softly through the speaker.

"Theo. Still pretending you chose the right sister to save?"

Mara pounded on the glass.

Evelyn moved toward her door.

A keypad glowed beside it.

"What do you want?" Evelyn shouted.

"Not the clips. Not anymore. That was Mara's little breadcrumb trail. Clever, but sentimental."

"Then what?"

"The one thing Helena spent thirty-four years hiding."

Evelyn's blood went cold.

"Me."

A pause.

"Exactly."

Behind the glass Mara shook her head so hard tears flew from her face.

Gideon's voice softened.

"You think this is about inheritance because Adrian showed you the Hart Trust. You think it's about the clinics because Theo showed you the ledgers. Those are consequences, Evelyn. Not the reason."

"Then tell me the reason."

"Ask your sister why she disappeared voluntarily the first time."

Evelyn stared at Mara.

Mara mouthed, Don't listen.

Gideon continued.

"Ask her why your mother faked her death. Ask Malcolm why he stayed buried. Ask Claire Bennett why she spent thirty years pretending to be your biological mother. Every one of them built a lie around the same night."

The night Evelyn was born.

"Room Zero," she whispered.

"Yes."

A lock clicked somewhere down the corridor.

Theo aimed toward the sound.

"Evelyn," he said, "get behind me."

A door opened.

Dr. Miriam Bell stepped into the red light.

She looked older than Evelyn remembered, but not surprised.

Never surprised.

In her hand was a medical case.

"Hello, Evie."

Evelyn's stomach turned.

"You were on the bridge."

"Yes."

"You drugged me."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Bell looked at Lily.

Then Mara.

Then Evelyn.

"Because you remembered too soon."

Theo raised his gun higher.

Bell did not move.

"If you shoot me, you'll never open Mara's door."

"Code," Theo said.

"No."

Bell's gaze remained on Evelyn.

"Blood."

Evelyn felt Lily's fingers tighten around hers.

Bell opened the medical case.

Inside were syringes, sealed tubes, and an old silver identification bracelet.

A name was engraved across it.

Not Evelyn Hart.

ELIZABETH VALE — INFANT 02.

Evelyn stared.

"Who is Elizabeth Vale?"

For the first time, Miriam Bell looked afraid.

"You were."

Behind the glass, Mara screamed.

Not in grief.

In warning.

The lights went out.

A gunshot cracked through Room Zero.

Lily screamed Evelyn's name.

And in the darkness, someone grabbed Evelyn from behind.
