Chapter 04 — The Paper Evelyn Signed

Chapter 4 of 12

The voice belonged to Adrian.

Evelyn pushed Lily behind her.

Naomi grabbed the iron fireplace poker.

"Don't," Adrian called from below. "I'm alone."

"That's what people say when they're not," Naomi whispered.

Evelyn stepped onto the landing.

Adrian stood at the bottom of the stairs, hands visible. His dark suit was wrinkled from travel. Rain shone on his shoulders.

He looked tired rather than angry.

That frightened her more.

"How did you find us?" Evelyn asked.

"Your car wasn't hard to track."

"It's Naomi's car."

He hesitated.

One second.

Enough.

"You tracked her phone," Evelyn said.

"I tracked yours."

She took her phone from her bag and threw it onto the floor between them.

"I turned it off hours ago."

"Off isn't the same as unreachable when the device belongs to a company account."

Naomi swore.

Evelyn's voice turned cold. "You installed monitoring software on my phone?"

"After the threats last year. You agreed to enhanced security."

"I agreed to protection. Not surveillance."

Adrian looked past her and saw Lily.

His face changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

Lily made a small sound and hid fully behind Evelyn.

Evelyn noticed.

"You've seen her before."

"No."

"You recognized her."

"I recognized Mara."

The name settled over the room.

It was the first time Adrian had said it since the funeral.

"She's alive," Evelyn said.

Adrian closed his eyes.

Not in disbelief.

In defeat.

Evelyn gripped the banister.

"You knew."

"Not at first."

"How long?"

"Evelyn—"

"How long?"

"Six years."

The answer hollowed her out.

Lily squeezed her hand.

Naomi came down one stair. "Start talking before I call every prosecutor I know."

Adrian looked at the Polaroid in Evelyn's hand.

"You found Room 17."

"What did I sign?"

He rubbed a hand over his face.

"A temporary guardianship petition."

Evelyn stared.

"For Mara?"

"You were told it was a protective asset order."

"By you."

"By Gideon. I prepared the packet."

"And you let me sign it."

"I was twenty-seven years old and terrified of losing my job. I believed Voss when he said Mara had survived the crash with severe psychiatric damage. Gideon claimed she was violent, delusional, unable to identify herself."

"Why didn't anyone tell me she was alive?"

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"Because the petition named you as the person she was supposedly obsessed with harming."

Evelyn went cold.

"That's insane."

"That was the point."

He climbed one step.

Naomi raised the poker.

He stopped.

"Three months later I discovered the patient wasn't in the facility listed on the court papers. I started asking questions. Gideon threatened me. Voss denied everything. Then I found a transfer order under a false name: Nora Reed."

Lily whispered, "That's Mom's name."

Adrian looked at her.

"I know."

Evelyn's anger sharpened. "And for six years you said nothing to me."

"I tried to find her first."

"Why?"

"Because if I told you without proof, you would have confronted Gideon. And if Gideon knew I was looking—"

"You decided for me."

"Yes."

The word came out raw.

"And it was wrong."

Evelyn wanted to hate him cleanly. It would have been easier if he denied everything.

Instead he reached into his inside pocket very slowly.

Naomi lifted the poker again.

"It's paper," he said.

He removed a folded photocopy and placed it on the stair.

Evelyn did not move.

"What is it?"

"The second page of your guardianship petition. The page you never saw."

Naomi picked it up.

Her eyes scanned the text.

Then she looked at Evelyn.

"This isn't just guardianship."

"What?"

"It authorizes involuntary medical treatment, restricted communication, and transfer of custodial rights for any child born while Mara was under care."

Lily's fingers tightened painfully around Evelyn's.

"Child?" Evelyn whispered.

Adrian looked at Lily.

"Gideon knew Mara was pregnant before the crash."

"Why would he care about her baby?"

Adrian's face darkened.

"Because of the Hart Trust."

Evelyn barely heard him.

"What about it?"

"Your father's estate didn't pass the way Gideon told you it did."

A floorboard creaked downstairs.

Adrian turned.

He had said he was alone.

A red dot appeared on his chest.

Naomi saw it first.

"DOWN!"

The front window exploded.
